Chapter 6 — Oliver Finally Explains What Victoria Said to Him
James sat beside Oliver.
“Are you okay?”
Oliver shrugged.
That meant no.
James looked toward him.
“Tell me.”
Oliver stared at the tablecloth.
“Grandma Victoria said I should be helpful.”
James frowned.
“What else?”
Oliver hesitated.
Then repeated the conversation.
When Preston Jr. arrived, Victoria took Oliver aside.
She said:
“We need your chair.”
Oliver asked where he would sit.
Victoria answered:
“You can eat after the donors.”
He reminded her that he was supposed to give the student welcome.
Victoria said:
“Then show them you understand service.”
James slowly looked toward her.
“You told him serving the people at the table was part of proving he understood the program?”
Victoria looked ashamed.
“I was trying to make him feel included.”
Oliver shook his head.
“It didn’t.”
Victoria stopped.
Oliver continued.
“It felt like I wasn’t important.”
James put one hand on his son’s shoulder.
Oliver looked toward the other children.
“Everybody else got dinner.”
Then toward Victoria.
“And you made me carry theirs.”
That sentence changed the room.
Victoria had been describing logistics.
Oliver described the experience.
Those were not the same thing.
