Oliver Was Forced to Serve Dinner While Everyone Else Sat Down — Then His Father Found the Place Card Proving His Seat Had Been Removed on Purpose

Chapter 3 — Oliver Wasn’t Just Another Dinner Guest

Victoria had spent three weeks organizing the dinner.

It was not a normal family gathering.

The evening was a private donor dinner for the Riverside Reading Project.

The program delivered books and tutoring to children at six local elementary schools.

Victoria served as volunteer chair.

James supported the organization.

Oliver did too.

In fact, Oliver had a specific reason for being there.

James pulled a folded program from his jacket.

He placed it in front of Victoria.

“Page two.”

She looked down.

Printed beneath the dinner schedule:

8:00 PM — STUDENT WELCOME: OLIVER BENNETT

Preston Vale looked toward Oliver.

“He’s speaking tonight?”

James nodded.

Oliver’s class had participated in the reading program during the previous school year.

The program supplied new books to his school library.

Students were asked to write short notes about what reading meant to them.

Oliver’s note was selected.

Victoria herself had asked him to read it during dinner.

Oliver had practiced for six days.

He carried the folded speech inside his jacket pocket.

James looked toward Victoria.

“You invited him to speak to these donors.”

“Then when an influential guest needed a chair, you turned him into staff.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

“I never called him staff.”

James stared.

“You gave him a bread basket and told him to serve people.”

There was no meaningful distinction.

Then Preston Vale Sr. spoke.

“Victoria, I never asked you to remove anyone.”

She looked toward him.

“I know.”

“I said if bringing Preston Jr. created a problem, we’d skip dinner.”

Victoria said nothing.

Preston continued.

“You told me there was plenty of room.”

James looked at her.

That was another problem.

Victoria told Oliver:

There isn’t enough room.

She told Preston:

There is plenty of room.

Both statements could not be true.
