Chapter 7 — James Finds Out Someone Tried to Stop It
After dinner, Mia approached James privately.
“There’s something else you should know.”
James looked toward her.
“What?”
Mia had not been the only caterer who noticed what happened.
The catering manager, Ethan Ross, had specifically told Victoria:
“We can add a thirteenth setting in less than two minutes.”
Victoria refused.
Then Ethan suggested moving the side table slightly to create more space.
Again, Victoria refused.
Finally he asked:
“Does the child have another seat?”
Victoria answered:
“He’s family. We’ll handle it.”
James closed his eyes.
That sentence bothered him most.
He’s family.
Victoria had treated family as the easiest group to inconvenience because she assumed they would absorb it quietly.
Mia continued.
“Mr. Ross told us not to ask Oliver to carry anything.”
James frowned.
“Then why was he serving bread?”
Mia looked uncomfortable.
Victoria had walked into the service area herself.
She picked up the bread basket.
Then handed it directly to Oliver.
“So catering didn’t ask him?”
“No.”
James looked across the room at Victoria.
The “helping with dinner” explanation collapsed too.
Oliver had not accidentally joined the service.
Victoria deliberately created that role after removing his seat.
