Chapter 8 — The Dinner Program Changes Before Dessert
The original schedule called for Victoria to introduce Preston Vale after the main course.
That did not happen.
Instead, James walked toward the small podium.
He looked at Oliver.
“Do you still want to give your speech?”
Oliver hesitated.
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
“Will people be mad?”
“No.”
“Can I do it sitting here?”
James smiled.
“Absolutely.”
The microphone was brought to Oliver.
He did not stand on a stage.
He remained in his chair.
The same chair that had been pushed against the wall.
Then he unfolded his paper.
His hands shook slightly.
James sat beside him.
Oliver began:
“My name is Oliver Bennett.”
Then:
“Last year our library got new books from Riverside Reading Project.”
He explained that before the program, many popular books were missing pages or shared by several classrooms.
Then boxes arrived.
Graphic novels.
Mysteries.
Science books.
Biographies.
Oliver discovered a book about space exploration.
He checked it out three times.
The room laughed.
Oliver relaxed.
Then he reached the final line:
“Kids read more when somebody makes room for them to find the book they love.”
Silence followed.
James looked toward Victoria.
The irony was impossible to miss.
The child had written a speech about making room for children.
And less than an hour earlier…
Victoria had told him there was no room for him at the table.
