Margaret Thought Ryan’s Red Sneakers Proved He Was the Porch Thief — Then Walter Zoomed In on the Hoodie and Saw the Detail That Cleared His Name

Chapter 2 — The Emblem Ryan Couldn’t Have Been Wearing

Walter enlarged the frame.

The image became grainy.

But the design remained visible.

A white falcon.

Underneath:

STA

Ryan pointed toward it.

“That’s St. Andrew’s Academy.”

Margaret looked toward him.

“How do you know?”

“Their teams wear that logo.”

“We play them in basketball.”

Walter looked at Ryan’s school backpack.

Across the front was a completely different emblem.

RIDGEWAY HIGH

Ryan attended Ridgeway.

He had never attended St. Andrew’s.

Margaret frowned.

“You could have somebody else’s hoodie.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Mom.”

“I’m asking.”

“No, you’re not.”

Ryan’s voice hardened.

“You already decided that’s me.”

Margaret looked toward the shoes.

“They look exactly like yours.”

Ryan looked down.

“They’re red sneakers.”

“Half the basketball team owns red sneakers.”

Walter raised one hand.

“Enough.”

Then he looked toward Ryan.

“Where were you at 4:42?”

Ryan thought.

“Basketball practice.”

Margaret immediately asked:

“Can you prove that?”

Ryan’s expression fell.

Walter noticed.

He disliked the direction of the conversation.

“Margaret.”

She looked toward her father.

“What?”

“Finding out where Ryan was is reasonable.”

“Treating him like he has to prove his innocence because somebody owns similar shoes is not.”

Margaret crossed her arms.

Ryan took out his phone.

“Practice started at four.”

He opened the team group chat.

At 4:31 PM, Coach Miller had posted a photograph from the gym.

Ryan was visible in the background.

At 4:47, another player sent a short video.

Ryan was on the court.

Walter checked the timestamps.

The porch thief had been at Margaret’s house at 4:42.

Ridgeway High was almost fifteen minutes away by car.

Ryan could not have been in both places.

Margaret’s face changed.

Ryan looked directly at her.

“Still think it’s me?”

She said nothing.

Walter returned to the camera recording.

“The red shoes are a similarity.”

“The school emblem is a difference.”

Then he advanced the footage frame by frame.

As the thief stood up, the hood shifted slightly.

For less than a second, another detail became visible beneath the school emblem.

A stitched number.

17.

Ryan stared at it.

“Grandpa…”

Walter looked toward him.

Ryan knew a St. Andrew’s athlete who wore number seventeen.
