Chapter 7 — The Hoodie Was Lucas’s, but the Person Inside Wasn’t
Ryan searched his phone.
Eventually he found a group photograph from a neighborhood cookout earlier that year.
Lucas stood in the background wearing a T-shirt.
Beside him was Tyler Bennett.
Tyler wore a dark St. Andrew’s basketball hoodie.
Number seventeen.
Walter looked at the photograph.
“Lucas gave him the hoodie?”
Ryan nodded.
“Lucas grew out of it.”
“Tyler wears his old stuff all the time.”
Margaret sat down.
The evidence had just changed direction again.
First, red shoes appeared to point toward Ryan.
Then the St. Andrew’s emblem and number seemed to point toward Lucas.
Now Andrew’s statement and an older photograph pointed toward Tyler.
Walter looked toward Margaret.
“This is why we keep checking.”
She nodded.
There was no argument left.
Ryan looked at the photograph more closely.
Tyler was also wearing bright red sneakers.
Not merely similar.
The same brand and model visible on the porch footage.
Still, Walter insisted:
“Shoes and a hoodie identify clothing.”
“We still need the person connected to the actual event.”
The officer apparently agreed.
Another neighbor’s side-yard camera covered part of Margaret’s driveway.
The most recent theft appeared there too.
This camera was mounted lower.
The teen’s hood still obscured most of his face.
But as he turned away from the porch, he briefly looked toward the street.
His face appeared clearly for less than one second.
The officer extracted the frame.
Walter opened the image.
Ryan looked at it.
“That’s Tyler.”
Margaret stared.
This time Walter did not need shoes.
He did not need a school number.
The face was visible.
And shortly afterward, Tyler’s family found something in their garage that removed nearly all remaining doubt.
