Margaret Thought Ryan’s Red Sneakers Proved He Was the Porch Thief — Then Walter Zoomed In on the Hoodie and Saw the Detail That Cleared His Name

Chapter 10 — Ryan Decides Whether to Face Tyler

Ryan thought for a long moment.

“Yeah.”

Margaret looked surprised.

“You want to see him?”

“I want to ask him something.”

Walter told Tyler’s father they could come the following afternoon.

The meeting was short.

Tyler arrived with both parents.

He did not wear the hoodie.

He did not wear the red sneakers.

He carried one of Margaret’s recovered boxes.

His father carried the rest.

Tyler looked embarrassed.

“I’m sorry.”

Margaret nodded but did not rush to reassure him.

“Why did you do it?”

Tyler looked toward the floor.

The first theft had been impulsive.

He had been walking home.

Saw a package sitting unattended.

Took it.

When nothing immediately happened, he did it again.

The second time, Andrew gave him a ride.

Tyler lied and said he was collecting something a friend had left outside.

Andrew believed him.

The third theft happened because Tyler had become confident the porch was easy.

Walter asked:

“Why did you ask Ryan about the doorbell camera?”

Tyler looked ashamed.

“I wanted to know if it worked.”

Ryan stared.

“So when you said your dad wanted one…”

“I lied.”

Ryan nodded.

Then he asked his question.

“Did you know Mom thought it was me?”

Tyler looked confused.

“No.”

Ryan pointed toward the recovered St. Andrew’s hoodie Tyler’s parents had brought with them.

“You wore Lucas’s number.”

“You wore red shoes like mine.”

“For a while, that made both of us look guilty.”

Tyler looked toward Margaret.

Then toward Ryan.

“I’m sorry.”

Ryan nodded once.

“Okay.”

He did not say everything was fine.

It wasn’t.

The stolen packages were returned.

Tyler’s parents agreed to reimburse Margaret for the damaged or opened items.

The existing police report would proceed through the appropriate juvenile process.

Margaret did not ask for harsher treatment.

She also did not pretend repeated theft required no consequence.

After Tyler left, Ryan stood at the window.

Walter joined him.

“You okay?”

Ryan shrugged.

“I guess.”

Then he looked toward Walter.

“You know what’s weird?”

“What?”

“The thing that made Mom think it was me is the thing that almost made us accuse Lucas next.”

Walter nodded.

“Clothes can point you somewhere.”

“They shouldn’t be allowed to finish the investigation.”

Ryan smiled faintly.

Then Margaret came into the room carrying his red sneakers.

Ryan stared.

“Why do you have my shoes?”

Her answer showed him she had finally understood what the entire incident was really about.
