Margaret Thought Ryan’s Red Sneakers Proved He Was the Porch Thief — Then Walter Zoomed In on the Hoodie and Saw the Detail That Cleared His Name
Chapter 9 — Why Margaret Was So Ready to Suspect Ryan
Months earlier, Ryan had taken one of Margaret’s unopened packages inside without telling her.
It had been raining.
He saw the box getting wet.
So he brought it into his bedroom while carrying the rest of his things upstairs.
Then forgot about it.
Margaret searched for the package for nearly two hours.
Eventually Ryan remembered.
The box was sitting beside his desk.
Nothing had been opened.
Nothing had been stolen.
But Margaret had been furious.
“You do not take my packages and put them somewhere without telling me.”
Ryan apologized.
He never did it again.
Now Margaret admitted:
“When I saw someone taking boxes from the porch, I remembered that.”
Ryan stared at her.
“I brought one box in because it was raining.”
“I know.”
“And you turned that into me stealing three packages?”
Margaret looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
Walter had been listening quietly.
He finally spoke.
“One past mistake can tell you what question to ask.”
“It cannot answer a new question for you.”
Margaret nodded.
Ryan looked toward his grandfather.
Walter continued.
“If Ryan had previously hidden a package, asking where he was today might be reasonable.”
“Deciding he was the thief because his shoes were red was not.”
Margaret looked toward Ryan.
“You’re right.”
Ryan remained quiet.
Then he asked:
“If Grandpa hadn’t zoomed into the hoodie, what would you have done?”
Margaret froze.
Ryan continued.
“Would you have called the police and said it was me?”
She looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Ryan’s face changed.
That answer hurt more than a quick no would have.
Margaret noticed.
“I should know.”
Ryan looked toward her.
“What?”
“I should be able to tell you I would have checked before making an accusation.”
“But after how I behaved, I can’t honestly promise that’s what I would’ve done.”
Ryan nodded slowly.
At least she was not rewriting her behavior now.
Then Walter’s phone rang.
It was Tyler’s father.
Tyler wanted to return the recovered property personally and apologize.
But Walter asked one question before agreeing.
“Does Ryan want to be there?”
Everyone turned toward him.
Because for the first time since the investigation began, the next decision belonged to the teenager who had nearly carried someone else’s blame.
