At first, everyone assumed Janet had simply used stolen identities to obtain medical treatment.
That turned out to be only part of it.
Several of Margaret’s suspicious visits were ordinary.
Blood tests.
Physical therapy.
Minor procedures.
But some appointments included expensive specialty medications.
One charge exceeded twelve thousand dollars.
Margaret stared at it.
“What kind of medicine costs that much?”
Denise explained that some injected therapies were extremely expensive.
Then investigators checked whether the medication had actually been administered.
The records showed it had.
But not always to the person registered as Margaret.
Security footage from one clinic visit showed Janet accompanying another woman.
A woman named:
Linda Collins.
Janet’s older sister.
Linda had lost her health coverage after a series of financial problems.
She also required ongoing treatment for a serious chronic condition.
Janet apparently began by using borrowed identities to obtain treatment for Linda.
Emma looked confused.
“So she was trying to help her sister?”
Margaret answered quietly.
“By using other people’s names.”
Marcus nodded.
And eventually it became more than that.
Once Janet realized she could manipulate old patient accounts, additional claims appeared.
Some corresponded to real treatments.
Others did not.
A small medical supply company repeatedly billed equipment connected to those false visits.
The company was owned by Janet’s boyfriend.
Now the pattern changed completely.
What may have begun as desperate misuse of identities for one person’s care had evolved into systematic fraudulent billing.
Margaret looked sick.
“And my name was just one of the names they used.”
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.”
Then he added:
“But yours may be the one that helps us prove how it started.”
