Chapter 2 — The Dead Emergency Contact
Daniel printed the suspicious records.
Margaret held them with trembling hands.
Every visit listed the same home address.
Her address.
Same birth date.
Same insurance provider.
But the emergency contact was wrong.
Alice Bennett.
Margaret’s younger sister had died after a short illness.
Emma had been only seven.
She barely remembered her.
“Could these records be old?” Emma asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“No. The dates are recent.”
Kelly pointed toward another field.
“Look here.”
Each suspicious visit listed a different phone number from Margaret’s actual number.
Daniel called it.
Disconnected.
Then he noticed something stranger.
The March visit included a scanned identification card.
He opened the image.
The driver’s license showed Margaret’s name and date of birth.
But the photograph was not Margaret.
Emma stared at it.
“That’s somebody else.”
The woman appeared roughly Margaret’s age.
Gray hair.
Round glasses.
Thin face.
Margaret leaned closer.
Then suddenly grabbed Emma’s arm.
“I know her.”
Daniel looked up.
“Who is she?”
Margaret whispered:
“Her name is Carol.”
“Carol who?”
Margaret struggled to remember.
Then it came back.
“Carol Mercer.”
Emma frowned.
“Family?”
Margaret shook her head.
“She was Alice’s friend.”
A very close friend.
Close enough that Carol had helped care for Alice during her final months.
Then after the funeral…
