Lily Was Blamed for Shattering Grandma Helen’s Favorite Vase — Then the Pet Camera Showed She Never Touched It
Chapter 4 — Why the Vase Meant So Much to Helen
Claire carefully gathered the larger pieces.
“Can this be repaired?”
Helen looked toward the fragments.
“I don’t know.”
The vase had belonged to Helen for almost thirty years.
It wasn’t valuable because of its price.
It had been one of the first things she bought for herself after moving into the house.
At the time, Claire and Michael were still young.
Money was tight.
Most household purchases were practical.
Furniture.
School supplies.
Groceries.
The vase was different.
Helen saw it in a shop window.
Liked it.
And bought it simply because it made her happy.
Over the years, it appeared in birthdays.
Holiday dinners.
Anniversary photographs.
Graduation celebrations.
It became part of the room without anyone noticing.
Claire understood why Helen reacted emotionally when she saw it broken.
But that still did not justify what happened next.
Helen looked toward Lily.
“Sweetheart, the vase mattered to me.”
Lily listened.
“But that doesn’t mean I should have blamed you.”
Claire watched carefully.
Helen continued.
“I was upset.”
“I saw you nearby.”
“And I decided what happened before I knew.”
Lily looked toward her.
“You thought I lied.”
Helen swallowed.
“Yes.”
“But I didn’t.”
“No.”
Helen crouched.
“You were telling me the truth.”
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
Lily did not immediately smile.
She leaned closer to Claire.
Helen accepted that.
An apology could begin repairing something.
It could not demand that the other person instantly feel better.
