Chapter 8 — Lily Asks Helen a Hard Question
After dinner, Lily sat beside Helen on the sofa.
“Grandma?”
“Yes?”
“If there wasn’t camera, would I still be in trouble?”
Helen stopped.
Claire heard the question from across the room.
She did not interrupt.
Helen thought carefully.
“Maybe.”
Lily frowned.
Helen continued.
“I hope I would have listened eventually.”
Then:
“But I can’t promise I would have checked quickly enough.”
Lily looked down.
“I knew Buddy did it.”
“I know.”
“But you thought me.”
Helen nodded.
“Yes.”
Lily asked:
“Why is camera better than me?”
Helen’s eyes filled.
That was the question.
It was not really about technology.
It was about whose version carried more weight.
Helen had trusted a visual recording immediately.
But only minutes earlier she had treated Lily’s own words as unreliable.
“The camera isn’t better than you,” Helen said.
“Then why?”
Helen answered honestly.
“Because I made up my mind too fast.”
“That’s something Grandma needs to change.”
Lily thought about it.
Then nodded.
“Okay.”
Helen held out her hand.
Lily took it.
That small gesture meant more to Helen than instant forgiveness would have.
