Lily Was Blamed for Shattering Grandma Helen’s Favorite Vase — Then the Pet Camera Showed She Never Touched It
Chapter 2 — Helen Had Moved the Vase Herself
Claire walked toward the empty shelf.
“It usually sits up there.”
Helen nodded.
“I moved it this morning.”
“Why?”
Helen looked toward the flowers on the floor.
That afternoon, the family was expecting Claire’s brother Michael and his wife for dinner.
Helen wanted the living room to look especially nice.
She had ordered fresh flowers.
Then decided the old blue-and-white vase would make the perfect centerpiece beside the sofa.
“That table isn’t stable,” Claire said.
Helen immediately answered:
“It’s stable enough.”
Claire pressed one corner.
The table rocked.
Helen looked away.
“It only does that if you push it.”
Claire stared at her.
“Buddy just proved otherwise.”
Lily looked toward Helen.
“You put it there?”
Helen nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why did you think me?”
Helen’s face fell.
There was no good answer.
She had seen Lily near the broken vase.
Lily was young.
Lily had been coloring nearby.
And only two days earlier, she had accidentally knocked a plastic cup off the kitchen counter.
Helen’s mind connected those facts faster than it checked them.
Lily was nearby.
Lily sometimes knocks things over.
The vase fell.
Therefore:
Lily.
Claire looked at her mother.
“She told you she didn’t do it.”
Helen nodded.
“I know.”
“And you kept questioning her.”
“I know.”
Lily leaned against Claire.
Helen looked toward the broken vase.
Then toward the unstable table she herself had chosen.
The accident no longer looked anything like the story she had formed in her head.
