Lily Was Blamed for Shattering Grandma Helen’s Favorite Vase — Then the Pet Camera Showed She Never Touched It
Chapter 6 — Michael Arrives Before Anyone Can Hide the Accident
The doorbell rang.
Claire looked at the clock.
Michael and his wife were early.
Helen immediately looked toward the broken pieces.
“I need to clean this up.”
Claire noticed the panic returning.
“We need to clean the glass because it’s dangerous.”
Then:
“Not because you need to pretend nothing happened.”
Helen stopped.
That was exactly what she had been about to do.
Hide the damage.
Replace the flowers.
Move another vase into position.
Make the room look perfect before anyone came inside.
Claire opened the door.
Michael stepped in carrying dessert.
“Why is Buddy locked in the kitchen?”
Then he saw the floor.
“Oh.”
Helen sighed.
“The vase broke.”
Michael looked toward Lily.
Helen noticed.
Before he could form the same assumption, she immediately said:
“Lily did not do it.”
Lily looked toward her.
Helen continued:
“Buddy knocked it down.”
“And I put it somewhere I shouldn’t have.”
Then:
“I blamed Lily before we checked.”
Michael stared.
“You did?”
Helen nodded.
“Yes.”
She did not say:
We thought Lily did it.
She did not spread responsibility across the room.
She said:
I blamed Lily.
Claire noticed the difference.
So did Lily.
