Rachel took the records to an attorney.

The attorney advised her not to confront Charles.

Instead, forensic accountants reviewed the documents.

Some payments could be traced.

Some could not.

But one company, Denton Municipal Services, had evolved from an entity created during the original foundation scandal.

It was now controlled by Charles’s son, Robert.

Investigators found that the old documents alone could not prove every allegation Thomas made.

But they were strong enough to reopen questions about how the original transfers occurred.

More importantly, the files contained authentication logs showing Thomas’s credentials had been accessed from an office terminal while he was attending a conference in another state.

That evidence had apparently never been included in the original investigation.

Rachel stared at the report.

“So someone used his account while he couldn’t physically have been there.”

The accountant nodded.

Charles Denton was elderly now.

When questioned, he denied stealing foundation money.

He claimed Thomas had manipulated records before fleeing.

But investigators also discovered Charles had quietly purchased assets through one of the same contractors shortly after the missing foundation money disappeared.

The matter became the subject of renewed legal scrutiny.

Rachel understood that she might never receive one perfect answer to every question.

Too much time had passed.
