Lily Found “214” Written Inside a Forbidden Kitchen Cabinet — Then Michael Saw the Look on Rachel’s Face

Chapter 5 — Box 214

The next morning, Rachel changed her mind.

She and Michael went to First County Bank.

The branch manager listened carefully.

Then checked old records.

Box 214 existed.

It had originally been rented by:

EVELYN BENNETT.

The account had remained inactive for years.

But because of an administrative oversight during a bank merger, the contents had never been transferred to abandoned-property storage.

Rachel provided identification and Evelyn’s estate documents.

After legal verification, the manager opened the vault.

The brass key worked.

Inside Box 214 was a thin metal case.

Rachel lifted it onto a private viewing table.

Inside were photographs.

Bank statements.

A cassette tape.

And a thick envelope addressed:

RACHEL.

She opened it.

The first page was written by Evelyn.

Your father did not steal the foundation money.

Rachel stopped reading.

Michael placed a hand on her shoulder.

She continued.

Evelyn explained that Thomas discovered unusual transfers several months before the scandal.

Money was being moved through accounts connected to fake contractors.

Thomas began copying records.

Then he told Evelyn he suspected someone senior inside the foundation.

“Who?” Michael asked.

Rachel turned the page.

A name appeared.

CHARLES DENTON.

Rachel knew it immediately.

Charles had been Thomas’s closest friend.

He had also been the man who helped Evelyn raise Rachel after Thomas disappeared.
