Lily Found “214” Written Inside a Forbidden Kitchen Cabinet — Then Michael Saw the Look on Rachel’s Face
Chapter 2 — The Key Behind the Hinge
Michael reopened the cabinet.
Rachel immediately reached for his arm.
“Don’t.”
He looked at her.
“Why?”
She had no answer.
Michael examined the inside panel.
Near the lower hinge, a thin strip of yellowed tape was barely visible.
He peeled it back.
A tiny brass key dropped into his palm.
A metal tag was attached.
Stamped into it:
214.
Michael looked at Rachel.
“Okay.”
He placed the key on the counter.
“Now you’re going to tell me.”
Rachel stared at it.
“I thought that key was gone.”
“What does it open?”
She whispered:
“A bank box.”
Michael frowned.
“Whose?”
Rachel took a long breath.
“My mother’s.”
Michael knew Rachel’s mother, Evelyn, had died twelve years earlier.
He also knew Rachel rarely spoke about the final year of her life.
“Why would her key be hidden in our cabinet?”
Rachel looked around the kitchen.
“Because this wasn’t always our cabinet.”
Michael stared at her.
Then remembered.
When they renovated the house, Rachel insisted on keeping one piece from her childhood home.
This cabinet.
She said it reminded her of her mother.
“You grew up with this?”
Rachel nodded.
“It hung in Mom’s kitchen.”
“Did you know the key was inside?”
“No.”
Michael pointed toward 214.
“But you knew that number.”
Rachel closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She looked toward Lily.
Then whispered:
“Because my mother wrote it on the last letter she ever sent me.”
