Lily Found “214” Written Inside a Forbidden Kitchen Cabinet — Then Michael Saw the Look on Rachel’s Face
Chapter 4 — Thomas Bennett
Thomas Bennett had been a financial manager for the Millbrook Community Foundation.
The organization funded food programs, school scholarships, and emergency housing.
For years, Thomas was trusted.
Then auditors discovered missing money.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars had been transferred through accounts Thomas supervised.
Police questioned him.
He denied stealing anything.
Two days later, Thomas vanished.
His car was discovered near a bus station.
His passport was missing.
So were several thousand dollars from his personal savings.
Everyone assumed he ran.
Rachel remembered newspapers calling him a thief.
Neighbors stopped speaking to Evelyn.
Children at school whispered about Rachel.
Eventually Evelyn stopped defending Thomas publicly.
She told Rachel:
“Your father made choices. We have to live with them.”
Michael stared at his wife.
“But her final letter suggested something different.”
Rachel nodded.
“That’s why I didn’t want to know.”
“Why?”
“Because what if Dad really stole it?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“What if Mom spent years protecting me from the details?”
Michael looked toward the kitchen cabinet.
“Or what if she spent years protecting someone else?”
Rachel stared at him.
That possibility frightened her even more.
