Rachel had called Charles Denton “Uncle Charles” throughout childhood.
He wasn’t related to them.
He had worked alongside Thomas at the foundation.
After Thomas vanished, Charles became the family’s biggest supporter.
He helped Evelyn with bills.
Drove Rachel to school.
Attended birthdays.
Even paid part of Rachel’s college tuition.
Michael looked stunned.
“And your mother suspected him?”
Rachel continued reading.
According to Evelyn, Thomas discovered that Charles had authorized payments to companies that existed only on paper.
When Thomas confronted him, Charles claimed the transfers were legitimate.
Thomas didn’t believe him.
He copied account records.
Then arranged to meet an investigator.
He never made the meeting.
Instead, evidence suddenly appeared pointing toward Thomas.
His employee login.
His approval codes.
Documents bearing his signature.
Then he disappeared.
Evelyn initially believed he had fled in panic.
But six months later, she received a postcard.
No return address.
Only one sentence:
I didn’t leave you by choice.
The handwriting was Thomas’s.
Rachel began crying.
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
Michael looked toward the cassette.
“Maybe that’s on there.”
The bank manager found an old player.
Rachel inserted the tape.
Static.
Then Evelyn’s voice.
“Rachel, if you are hearing this, I finally decided you deserve the truth.”
But the next voice on the tape was not Evelyn’s.
It was a man.
