Chapter 3 — Evelyn’s Last Letter
After Lily went to play in the living room, Rachel sat at the kitchen table.
Michael remained across from her.
The brass key sat between them.
“What did the letter say?”
Rachel rubbed her hands together.
“Not much.”
Evelyn had been seriously ill at the time.
Rachel was twenty-two.
She was living several hours away while finishing college.
One week before Evelyn died, Rachel received a handwritten letter.
Most of it was ordinary.
Advice.
An apology for arguments they’d had.
A reminder that Evelyn loved her.
But at the bottom were three numbers.
214.
Underneath them:
When you are ready to know why your father left, find this.
Michael leaned back.
Rachel’s father, Thomas Bennett, had disappeared when she was eleven.
At least that was the story Michael knew.
“You told me he abandoned you.”
Rachel nodded.
“That’s what Mom told everyone.”
“Did you ever look for Box 214?”
Rachel shook her head.
“There was no key.”
She searched Evelyn’s bedroom.
Her purse.
Her desk.
Every drawer.
Nothing.
Eventually Rachel convinced herself that 214 referred to something else.
Or that Evelyn had been confused because of medication.
Years passed.
Then Rachel married Michael.
Had Lily.
Built another life.
She stopped wondering.
Until now.
Michael picked up the key.
“Which bank?”
Rachel looked at him.
“I think I know.”
The old First County Bank where Evelyn kept her accounts still existed downtown.
Michael stood.
“Then tomorrow we ask about Box 214.”
Rachel immediately shook her head.
“No.”
Michael frowned.
“Why not?”
Rachel’s voice became quiet.
“Because my father didn’t just disappear.”
She looked directly at him.
“He disappeared after being accused of stealing nearly half a million dollars.”
