Chapter 4 — Emma Had Been Blamed Before
Rachel sat beside Emma.
“Sweetheart, are you okay?”
Emma nodded automatically.
Rachel waited.
Then Emma shook her head.
“Grandma always thinks me.”
Margaret looked toward her.
“What do you mean?”
Emma did not answer.
Rachel gently asked:
“Can you tell us?”
Emma thought.
Then began listing things.
Two weeks earlier, someone left crayons on the sofa.
Margaret blamed Emma.
They belonged to her cousin Lily.
Several days later, a kitchen towel was found on the floor.
Margaret asked Emma why she had dropped it.
Robert later admitted he had knocked it down while carrying groceries.
Then one morning, Buddy somehow got into the pantry.
Margaret assumed Emma had left the door open.
Security footage later showed the latch had not fully closed after Margaret used it.
Rachel slowly looked toward her mother.
“Mom.”
Margaret looked uncomfortable.
“Those were small things.”
Emma immediately said:
“But you said me.”
Margaret stopped.
To her, they were small incidents.
To Emma, they were repeated experiences of being the easiest explanation.
Margaret had begun thinking of Emma as careless.
Not because Emma was unusually careless.
Because Emma was the youngest child who spent the most time in Margaret’s house.
She colored.
Played.
Moved things.
Made noise.
Sometimes she genuinely caused messes.
But Margaret had slowly transformed:

into:
If there’s a mess and Emma is nearby, Emma probably caused it.
That shortcut had just ended with a child crying beside a trophy she never touched.
