Chapter 5 — Robert Comes Home Early
The front door opened unexpectedly.
Margaret froze.
“That’s your father.”
Rachel looked at the clock.
Robert was almost an hour early.
“Why is he here?”
Robert called from the hallway:
“Margaret?”
Then he walked into the family room.
He saw Rachel.
Emma.
Margaret.
And the broken trophy.
“What happened?”
Margaret immediately started:
“The surprise is ruined.”
Robert frowned.
“What surprise?”
Rachel sighed.
That part was over.
Margaret explained.
The family lunch.
The video.
The planned presentation.
Then Robert looked toward the damaged trophy.
“How did it break?”
Margaret paused.
Emma looked at her.
Rachel did too.
This was the moment.
Margaret could say:
The dog knocked it over.
That would be technically true.
It would also hide the most important part.
Margaret took a breath.
“I moved it onto the side table.”
Robert looked toward the table.
“That thing?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“For pictures.”
Margaret continued.
“Buddy bumped the table.”
“The trophy fell.”
Then her voice became quieter.
“Emma came in afterward.”
Robert looked toward his granddaughter.
“Okay.”
Margaret swallowed.
“And I blamed her.”
Robert’s expression changed.
“You what?”
Emma looked down.
Margaret continued.
“She told me she didn’t do it.”
“I didn’t believe her.”
“Rachel checked the camera.”
“Emma was telling the truth.”
Robert looked toward Margaret for several seconds.
Then toward Emma.
He crouched beside her.
“Are you okay?”
Emma shrugged.
Robert opened his arms.
She hugged him.
Then he looked toward the trophy.
“I don’t care about this nearly as much as you think I do.”
Margaret stared.
“Robert.”
“It’s a trophy.”
“It can probably be repaired.”
He pointed gently toward Emma.
“She matters more.”
Margaret looked away.
That was exactly what she needed to hear.
