By four o’clock, the rest of the family arrived.
Thomas.
His wife.
Two cousins.
Rachel’s aunt Susan.
Everyone expected the trophy presentation.
Instead, the display cabinet was empty.
Thomas noticed.
“Where’s the relay trophy?”
Margaret looked toward Emma.
Then toward Robert.
“Being repaired.”
Thomas frowned.
“Already?”
Robert laughed.
“Long story.”
Margaret could have left it there.
But she didn’t.
“Actually, I should explain.”
Rachel looked toward her.
Margaret told the family.
She moved the trophy.
Buddy knocked it over.
Emma found it afterward.
Margaret accused her.
The camera proved Emma was innocent.
She did not blame the unstable table.
She did not blame Robert’s earlier trunk incident.
She did not present herself as merely confused.
She said:
“Emma told me the truth, and I did not believe her.”
Then Margaret looked toward her granddaughter.
“I’m sorry.”
Several relatives became quiet.
Emma looked slightly embarrassed by the attention.
Rachel immediately noticed.
“Okay.”
She smiled.
“That’s enough public family accountability for one afternoon.”
Everyone laughed softly.
Then the celebration continued.

The video played.
Neighbors thanked Robert for organizing the relay.
Children from the community center held signs.

Robert’s eyes filled.
Then Emma walked toward him.

She had drawn Robert running beside a giant cup.

The family laughed.
Robert hugged her.
