Emma Was Punished for Breaking the Family Trophy — Then the Security Camera Showed the Dog Knocked It Down After Grandma Moved It Herself
Chapter 9 — Margaret Notices Her Own Shortcut
Over the following weeks, Margaret began catching herself.
The habit was more common than she realized.
One afternoon, a spoon disappeared from the kitchen table.
Emma was nearby.
Margaret almost said:
“Where did you put it?”
Then stopped.
“Emma, have you seen the spoon?”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
Margaret looked around.
Robert had accidentally carried it into the living room with his coffee.
Another day, muddy footprints appeared near the back door.
Emma had been outside.
So had Buddy.
Margaret looked at Emma’s shoes.
Clean.
Then at Buddy’s paws.
Covered in mud.
“Buddy.”
The dog wagged his tail.
Margaret sighed.
“Zero remorse.”
Emma laughed.
Sometimes Emma really was responsible.
A purple crayon mark appeared on the lower wall.
Margaret asked:
“Do you know anything about this?”
Emma stared at it.
Then at the purple crayon in her own hand.
“Maybe me.”
Margaret almost smiled.
“Thank you for telling me.”
They cleaned it together.
That was the change.
Margaret did not decide Emma was innocent of everything.
She stopped deciding Emma was guilty before asking.
There was a large difference.
