Claire remembered the notebook immediately.
Her mother kept a small green ledger containing handwritten notes about family finances.
After Margaret died, nobody could find it.
Claire assumed it had been thrown away.

Police obtained records from Robert’s office.
Then something strange appeared.
For years, Robert had been charging Margaret’s estate for “property management services.”
The lake property required almost no management.
No buildings.
No tenants.
No regular maintenance.
Yet thousands of dollars left the estate each year.
Margaret’s notebook explained why.
Before her death, she had begun comparing Robert’s invoices.
She suspected he was overbilling the estate.

Claire read that line twice.

After Margaret hid the ring, she privately told Robert it was missing.
Robert immediately blamed David.
But he also knew exactly what the ring looked like and how much it was worth.
Margaret had never given him those details.
