Chapter 5 — The Footprints Tell a Different Story
Police arrived fifteen minutes later.
Officer Lena Ortiz examined the side entrance first.
No broken lock.
No damaged window.
Whoever entered either had a key…
or had been allowed inside.
Michael looked toward Claire.
“Were you home all afternoon?”
Claire nodded.
“Mostly.”
Ortiz caught the word.
“Mostly?”
Claire explained that she left for approximately twenty minutes to pick up groceries.
Emma had been at school.
The house was empty.
When Claire returned, she noticed nothing unusual.
Emma came home later.
Then found the ring near the study.
Claire assumed the child had discovered the secret drawer herself.
“So you never checked the room?” Michael asked.
Claire shook her head.
Ortiz photographed the footprints.
Large work boots.
Distinctive tread.
One heel had a triangular section missing.
Then she followed the trail backward.
The tracks didn’t begin at the front entrance.
They started near the rear mudroom.
Outside, the soil was wet from afternoon rain.
A second set of tracks appeared beside the garage.
Smaller shoes.
Different pattern.
Michael frowned.
“Two people?”
Ortiz nodded.
Then she noticed tire impressions behind the detached garage.
A vehicle had been parked where it couldn’t be seen from the street.
This wasn’t somebody casually stopping by to retrieve an old file.
Someone had planned not to be noticed.
Then Michael remembered something.
There was a security camera above the garage.
