Chapter 3 — Claire’s First Secret
Michael sent Emma next door to stay with their neighbor, Mrs. Daniels.
Then he returned to the study.
Claire was standing beside the desk.
“Tell me everything.”
She looked exhausted.
“My mother didn’t lose the ring.”
“Then why did everyone think she did?”
Claire sat down.
“Because she hid it.”
Before Margaret died, she became increasingly suspicious of Claire’s older brother, David.
David had struggled with debt for years.
Margaret believed he had started selling family possessions without permission.
Silverware.
Old watches.
Several paintings.
David denied it.
Then Margaret’s ring supposedly disappeared.
The entire family blamed David.
But shortly before her death, Margaret told Claire the truth.
She had hidden the ring herself.
Inside the secret drawer in the study.
“Why?” Michael asked.
“Because she wanted to see what David would do.”
Margaret suspected he had been searching the house.
She hid several valuable objects and watched to see whether he asked about them.
Then her health deteriorated before she could resolve anything.
“Why didn’t you tell the family after she died?”
Claire looked down.
“Because David was already being accused.”
Michael frowned.
“That sounds like a reason to tell them.”
“I was angry with him.”
Claire admitted that David had borrowed money from Margaret and never repaid it.
He had lied repeatedly.
Claire convinced herself that even if he hadn’t taken the ring, he had caused enough pain already.
So she left it hidden.
Michael stared at her.
“For three years?”
Claire nodded.
“Until today.”
Michael looked toward the broken drawer.
“Someone knew where it was.”
Claire’s face tightened.
“Only three people ever knew.”
“Your mother.”
Claire nodded.
“Me.”
“And?”
Claire whispered:
“Her attorney.”
