The investigation uncovered an uncomfortable truth.
David had lied many times over the years.
He had borrowed money.

But he had not stolen Margaret’s ring.
And investigators found no evidence he had taken several of the other objects blamed on him.
Some had been sold through an antique dealer connected to Robert.
Records showed payments to a company Robert secretly controlled.
Margaret had started uncovering the pattern before her death.
Robert apparently realized her notebook could expose years of questionable transactions involving the estate.
When he learned the lake property was finally being sold, he became worried the estate would undergo a deeper financial review.
He needed the notebook gone.
So he manipulated David.
He told him Claire was stealing his inheritance.
He promised to find documents proving it.
Then used David as both help and potential blame.
If anyone discovered the break-in, suspicion would naturally fall on the brother already accused of taking family property.
Claire sat silently after hearing this.

David looked at her.
“You hated me.”
