Emily Opened an Old Storage Box Filled With Family Files — Then Grandpa Arthur Recognized Victoria’s Signature on the Document She Never Wanted Them to See
Chapter 8 — The Call Log in the Locked Drawer
Victoria had the key.
That alone told Arthur enough.
“Open it.”
She hesitated.
“Arthur, I think we’ve found enough for one day.”
“I didn’t ask whether you thought I’d had enough.”
Victoria slowly unlocked the drawer.
Inside were household notebooks.
Old appointment books.
Telephone messages.
Emily found the years Arthur wanted.
They sat together at the table.
Samuel had called often at first.
Twelve times during the first year.
Seven the next.
Four the third.
Then fewer.
Some notes said:
Arthur unavailable.
Others:
Told Samuel not a good time.
Then:
Advised no further calls necessary.
Arthur’s eyes stopped on that one.
“Who advised him?”
Victoria whispered:
“I did.”
Arthur closed the notebook.
Emily looked toward another page.
Rebecca had called repeatedly too.
Thomas had called before Thanksgiving several years in a row.
Elaine sent birthday wishes.
The family had not disappeared all at once.
They had slowly learned that reaching Arthur led nowhere.
Eventually they accepted the message they believed Arthur was sending.
Leave him alone.
Arthur looked toward Victoria.
“You made them think that was what I wanted.”
Victoria nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you made me think their silence was what they wanted.”
Another nod.
Arthur pushed the notebook away.
Emily expected him to shout.
He did not.
He looked devastated.
“Nine years.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“I know.”
“No.”
Arthur looked toward her.
“You know the number.”
“I am only now learning what was inside those years.”
He looked toward Rebecca’s photograph.
Children he had never met.
Birthdays he never knew happened.
Invitations he never received.
Apologies he never read.
Then Emily found one envelope with handwriting she recognized immediately.
It belonged to her own mother, Claire.
And Emily had no idea why a letter from Claire to Grandpa Arthur had ever been placed in Victoria’s hidden box.
