Chapter 12 — Arthur Calls Samuel
Emily found Samuel’s number through Rebecca.
Arthur stared at it for nearly a full minute.
Then pressed call.
One ring.
Two.
Three.
A man’s voice answered.
“Hello?”
Arthur stopped breathing for a second.
“Samuel?”
Silence.
Then:
“Arthur?”
Victoria sat down across the room.
Emily remained beside her grandfather.
Arthur’s voice shook.
“I found your letters.”
Another silence.
“What letters?”
Arthur looked toward Victoria.
“All of them.”
Samuel did not speak.
Arthur continued.
“I didn’t know you wrote.”
“I didn’t know Rebecca called.”
“I didn’t know about Thanksgiving.”
Samuel’s voice changed.
“Arthur, I sent eleven letters.”
“I know.”
“I called until Victoria told me you wanted no contact.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
“I never said that.”
Silence again.
Then Samuel asked:
“Is Victoria there?”
Arthur answered:
“Yes.”
Samuel laughed once.
There was no humor in it.
“Of course she is.”
Arthur did not defend her.
“Samuel, I believed you stopped trying.”
Samuel’s answer came immediately.
“And I believed you wanted me gone.”
Arthur sat down.
Two brothers had spent nearly a decade angry at one another over messages neither actually sent.
Arthur whispered:
“I’m sorry.”
Samuel became quiet.
“For what?”
Arthur thought.
“For letting pride keep me from calling you myself.”
“Even if I believed you had stopped writing, I could still have picked up a phone.”
Samuel sighed.
“I could have driven over.”
“Maybe.”
Neither brother tried to make Victoria responsible for every lost year.
She had created the false silence.
But Arthur and Samuel had both eventually accepted that silence without pushing through it.
There was enough responsibility to go around without confusing whose lie started the problem.
Then Samuel said:
“I kept copies.”
Arthur frowned.
“Copies of what?”
“Everything I sent you.”
And one of those copies contained a message Victoria’s hidden box did not.
