Chapter 14 — Victoria Leaves
Victoria did not argue.
She gathered her bag.
At the front door, she turned toward Arthur.
“I’m sorry.”
Arthur looked at her.
“I believe you are.”
Victoria’s eyes filled.
“But?”
“But sorry does not give me back nine years.”
Victoria nodded.
“I know.”
Arthur continued.
“And I cannot decide tonight what our relationship looks like after this.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
Victoria swallowed.
“I’m trying to.”
Arthur opened the door.
Victoria left.
Emily stayed with her grandfather.
The house felt strange without Victoria.
She had been part of almost every family gathering Emily could remember.
Now the person who had helped hold Arthur’s life together after Eleanor died was also the person who had quietly broken so many of his other connections.
Both things were true.
Arthur did not need to pretend Victoria had never helped him.
He also did not need that help to excuse what came later.
That evening, he and Emily opened every remaining letter.
Some were painful.
Some ordinary.
Birthday wishes.
Christmas cards.
Pictures.
Invitations.
One note from Thomas simply said:
Arthur, I made too much soup. Come rescue me from it.
Arthur laughed for the first time all day.
Then cried.
“He used to make terrible soup.”
Emily smiled.
“Maybe that part hasn’t changed.”
Arthur called Thomas the next morning.
Then Rebecca.
Rebecca cried when she heard his voice.
Arthur asked about her children.
She sent newer photographs.
Noah was now eight.
Grace was six.
Arthur stared at them for a long time.
“I’ve missed everything.”
Emily corrected him gently.
“Not everything.”
Arthur looked toward her.
“They’re still here.”
He nodded.
The lost years mattered.
But the family still had years ahead.
Then Rebecca asked whether Arthur would meet Samuel in person.
Arthur immediately said yes.
But Samuel had one condition.
He wanted Victoria there too.
