Chapter 15 — Samuel Wants Victoria in the Room
Arthur stared at the message.
“Why would he want Victoria there?”
Rebecca explained.
Samuel did not want a dramatic confrontation.
He wanted clarity.
For years, Victoria had spoken to each brother on behalf of the other.
This time, Samuel wanted everyone in one room.
No messages carried through someone else.
No private summaries afterward.

Everyone would speak for themselves.
Arthur agreed.
A week later, Samuel came to Arthur’s house.
Rebecca came too.
So did Emily’s mother Claire.
Victoria arrived last.
She looked nervous.
Samuel stood when she entered.
Neither spoke immediately.

“I was furious with you for years.”
Victoria nodded.
“You had reason.”
“I thought you were speaking for Arthur.”
“I wasn’t.”
“Not honestly.”
Victoria looked toward Arthur.

Samuel continued.

Arthur looked toward him.

“After enough letters came back unanswered, I decided my pride mattered more than showing up at your door.”
Arthur nodded.
“Same.”
Then Arthur looked toward Victoria.
“But I want something understood.”
The room became quiet.
“Samuel and I can regret the choices we made after the silence began.”
“That does not make the original deception a shared misunderstanding.”
Victoria nodded.
“I know.”
Arthur continued.
“You withheld letters.”
“Yes.”
“You intercepted calls.”

“You told Samuel I wanted no contact when I had never said that.”
“Yes.”
“You told me they had stopped trying.”
“Yes.”

“And you destroyed one letter because it threatened to expose what you were doing.”
Victoria looked down.
“Yes.”

Samuel finally sat down.

Victoria wiped her eyes.
