Chapter 5 — The Price of the Box
Marcus Hart had not contacted Vanessa out of kindness.
He wanted twenty thousand dollars.
In exchange, he would give her the storage key and every item Rachel had supposedly left behind.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“That’s blackmail.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you call the police?”
“Because he never threatened me directly.”
“He demanded twenty thousand dollars for property that belongs to my daughter.”
Vanessa looked down.
“He said if I didn’t come, he’d destroy everything.”
Daniel’s anger shifted.
“Show me the messages.”
Vanessa hesitated.
Then handed him her phone.
The messages were there.
COME ALONE.
NO DANIEL.
BRING SOMETHING I CAN SELL.
Then:
IF YOU WANT THE GIRL TO GET WHAT HER MOTHER LEFT HER, YOU KNOW THE PRICE.
Daniel read every message.
“Why the necklace?”
It had been his mother’s.
An antique gold piece with small emerald stones.
Worth several thousand dollars.
Vanessa planned to offer it as partial payment.
“Then why hide it in Sophie’s bunny?”
Vanessa’s face changed.
This was the question she had been avoiding.
“I needed somewhere you wouldn’t look.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You used my daughter’s favorite toy as a hiding place.”
Vanessa nodded.
“And when Sophie saw you…”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“I panicked.”
“So you accused her of stealing the necklace.”
“I thought if she believed she’d get in trouble for going near it, she wouldn’t tell you about the ticket.”
Daniel’s face went cold.
“You made a seven-year-old think she was being punished for something you did.”
Vanessa whispered:
“Yes.”
Daniel turned away.
The secret trip was bad.
The lies were worse.
