Daniel Found Vanessa’s Missing Necklace Inside Sophie’s Bunny — Then He Pulled Out a Plane Ticket for the Next Morning
Chapter 6 — Rachel’s Old Email
Daniel did not let Vanessa travel the next morning.
Instead, he contacted an attorney.
Then the police.
Marcus’s messages were preserved.
Investigators advised them not to confront him.
But Daniel still needed to know whether Rachel had actually left anything behind.
He opened an old email account he had not checked in years.
Rachel’s messages were still archived there.
Daniel searched:
Marcus Hart.
Three results appeared.
His hands began shaking.
The oldest email was dated eight years earlier.
Rachel had written:
Marcus, thank you for photographing the foundation records before they were moved.
Another email mentioned a storage unit.
Then Daniel opened the final message.
It had been sent only weeks before Rachel became seriously ill.
If anything happens to me, the blue box is for Sophie.
Daniel stopped reading.
Vanessa sat beside him.
He continued.
Do not release it to anyone except Daniel, or Sophie when she is older.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Marcus knew this belonged to us.”
She nodded.
The email included an attachment.
A photograph.
A small blue metal box.
On top, written in Rachel’s handwriting:
FOR SOPHIE.
Daniel felt something tighten in his chest.
Rachel had prepared something for their daughter.
And for years, nobody knew it existed.
Except Marcus.
Then Daniel noticed one more detail in the email.
Rachel had included a storage facility name.
They didn’t need Marcus’s key after all.
