Chapter 6 — Thomas’s Letter to David
Ryan’s grandmother, Susan, brought more of Thomas’s belongings to the reunion hotel that evening.
Ryan told her everything.
She sat silently for almost a minute.
Then said:
“I wondered when this would come back.”
Ryan stared at her.
“You knew?”
Susan nodded.
Thomas told her after they married.
He hated the false version of the race.
But he also knew correcting it publicly could threaten the championship records of three teammates who had done nothing wrong.
“Why didn’t he say something after all these years?”
Susan opened a small folder.
Inside were copies of letters Thomas wrote to David Vale.
One dated 1994.
Dave, ten years is enough. We can tell people what happened without asking them to erase the team title.
Another from 2004:
I don’t want your scholarship or your reputation. I just want Peter’s name and mine to stop being missing from a race we actually ran.
Ryan looked toward Martin.
“Peter too.”
Martin nodded.
Peter Lawson had run the third leg after David’s injury.
He was a reserve runner.
But because the official lineup never changed, Peter vanished from the record entirely.
“What did David say?”
Susan handed Ryan another letter.
This one came from David.
Tom, I know you’re right. Every year makes fixing it harder.
Then:
Dad still says changing the story will make it look like we cheated our way into the title.
David’s father had been president of Riverton’s athletic booster club.
He spent years discouraging David from speaking.
“Eventually your grandfather stopped asking,” Susan said.
Ryan looked toward the film case.
“But he kept the proof.”
Susan nodded.
“Yes.”
