The old eight-millimeter reel was digitized the next morning.
Ryan.
Susan.
Claire.
School athletic director Margaret Ellis.
And several surviving members of the 1984 team watched together.
The film began with shaky footage of the stadium.
Parents in the stands.
Teenagers warming up.
Then came the relay.
First exchange.
Second exchange.
The camera zoomed badly.
But the runners were visible.
Peter Lawson ran the third leg.
There was no doubt.
Then he handed the baton to Thomas Parker.
Ryan leaned forward.
“That’s Grandpa.”
Susan began crying.
Thomas sprinted the final straightaway.
Another runner gained on him.
Then Thomas leaned across the line.
Riverton won.
For several seconds the camera continued rolling.
Thomas collapsed onto the track.
His teammates rushed toward him.
David Vale appeared from the sideline.
Not wearing racing spikes.
His left ankle wrapped tightly.
Claire looked toward Martin.
“There’s no ambiguity.”
Martin nodded.
Then another section appeared.
Someone had filmed the team after the race.
A local reporter asked:
“David, what was going through your mind on that final leg?”
Teenage David looked confused.
He started to answer:
“I didn’t—”
Coach Benton stepped into frame.
He put one hand on David’s shoulder.
Then said:
“Whole team effort. Let’s keep the boys together.”
The interview ended.
Ryan stared at the screen.
David had tried to correct the reporter immediately.
