Chapter 8 — Why Martin Tried to Steal the Film
Ryan confronted Martin at the airport security office after the film was verified.
“Your dad wasn’t the one who created the lie.”
Martin looked away.
“No.”
“Then why steal this?”
Martin’s answer surprised him.
David Vale had died six months earlier.
Before his death, he told Martin about Thomas’s letters.
And about the relay substitution.
Then David asked his son to do something.
“If the school ever honors that race again, tell them.”
Ryan stared at him.
“He wanted the truth out.”
Martin nodded.
“Yes.”
“Then why were you trying to stop it?”
Martin’s eyes filled.
Because David Vale Memorial Scholarship had grown into something larger than the race.
Hundreds of students had applied over the years.
The school track complex displayed David’s photograph.
Martin had spent his childhood hearing people tell him:
“Your father won that championship.”
He knew intellectually that correcting the race did not erase David’s life.
Emotionally, it felt different.
“I thought everybody would call him a fraud.”
Ryan shook his head.
“So you were going to make Grandpa disappear again?”
Martin looked ashamed.
“I panicked when I heard Susan found the film.”
He learned Ryan’s flight information through an alumni email discussing the reunion arrival schedule.
He traveled to the airport hoping to talk to him.
Then he saw Ryan’s suitcase.
He saw the blue case.
And made a decision.
“A very bad one,” Claire said.
Martin nodded.
“Yes.”
Claire looked at him.
“Fear might explain why you didn’t want the film shown.”
Then:
“It doesn’t explain switching a stranger’s luggage and stealing it.”
Martin did not argue.
He knew she was right.
