The reunion ceremony went forward.
But the school changed the presentation.
Margaret Ellis refused to simply replace David’s name with Thomas’s.
“That would repeat the same mistake in the opposite direction.”
The corrected display explained exactly what happened.
Riverton’s intended relay lineup included David Vale.
David was injured during warmups.
Peter Lawson substituted into the third leg.
Thomas Parker moved to anchor.
The substitution was not properly recorded before the race.
The official lineup therefore remained inaccurate.
The surviving film established who actually ran.
The new exhibit listed:
ERIC MORRIS — FIRST LEG
JAMES COLE — SECOND LEG
PETER LAWSON — THIRD LEG
THOMAS PARKER — ANCHOR
Then below:
DAVID VALE — ORIGINAL ANCHOR, WITHDREW AFTER WARMUP INJURY.
David was not erased.
Neither were Peter and Thomas.
Peter Lawson attended the ceremony.
He was seventy now.
When he saw his name on the display, he laughed.
“Only took forty-two years.”
Ryan smiled.
“You knew the whole time?”
Peter nodded.
“Of course.”
“Why didn’t you say something?”
Peter shrugged.
“At seventeen, I thought we’d fix it the next week.”
Then:
“At twenty-seven, it felt awkward.”
“At forty-seven, it felt pointless.”
He looked toward Thomas’s photograph.
“Then suddenly you’re old and wondering why everybody was so afraid of one correction.”
Susan took his hand.
“Thomas wondered too.”
