Riverton High’s 1984 relay team was legendary locally.

They had won the state championship by less than half a second.

The winning photograph still hung inside the school gym.

David Vale was credited with running the final leg.

He became the face of the victory.

Local newspaper headlines called him:

THE BOY WHO BROUGHT RIVERTON HOME.

Years later, David became a track coach.

Then athletic director.

A scholarship was eventually named after him.

Ryan knew all of that.

His grandfather barely spoke about the race.

“Grandpa always said the team won.”

I won.

David won.

Just:

We won.

Claire asked:

“What’s on the film reel?”

Ryan shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

His grandmother found it inside an old camera box after Thomas died.

The handwritten label said:

STATE FINAL — RELAY — DON’T LOSE.

Ryan planned to have it digitized before the school ceremony.

Martin looked increasingly uncomfortable.

Daniel noticed.

“You know what’s on it.”

“No.”

“Then why were you near his suitcase?”

Martin continued denying involvement.

Airport security reviewed baggage-hall footage.

The camera showed Ryan’s suitcase appearing on the carousel.

Martin approached.

He looked around.

Then slipped Claire’s printed name tag over Ryan’s handle.

Seconds later, Claire’s bag arrived.

Martin attached Ryan’s name to it.

Then stepped away.

There was no longer any question.

Martin had switched the bags deliberately.

But footage showed something even more important.

He removed the blue metal case.

Then placed it inside his gray carry-on bag.

Daniel paused the footage.
