Chapter 9 — Sophie Gets an Apology
The old disappearance was reviewed by an attorney and investigators familiar with historical family cases.
Decades had passed.
Some people were dead.
Some evidence was gone.
Not every question could be answered perfectly.
But several facts became much clearer.
Caroline had willingly asked Adrian to remove Nathan from an unsafe situation.
She later accused Adrian after becoming afraid of Eric.
Helen then made her own unlawful decision by moving and concealing the child rather than contacting authorities.
And Patricia later found evidence that could have corrected part of the story, but chose silence.
No single person carried every piece of blame.
Several frightened adults made decisions.
Then other adults spent years protecting those decisions.
Vanessa struggled most with Patricia’s role.
She had adored her mother.
Learning Patricia kept Caroline’s letter did not erase that love.
But it changed how Vanessa understood her.
One evening, Vanessa sat beside Sophie at the kitchen counter.
The same place where everything had begun.
“I owe you an apology.”
Sophie looked at her.
“Because you said I was making it up?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.”
“But I heard you.”
“You did.”
“And I found the picture.”
“You did.”
Sophie folded her arms.
“Then why didn’t you believe me?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Because I was scared your dad would find out something I wasn’t ready to explain.”
Sophie thought about that.
“So you said I was lying because you were scared?”
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.”
Sophie replied with devastating simplicity.
“That’s not nice.”
Vanessa almost smiled.
“No. It wasn’t.”
