Chapter 2 — The Scratch Was Visible at Check-In
Mark enlarged the second camera angle.
The timestamp read:
8:07 AM.
Richard had arrived only moments earlier.
The car was parked beside the reception lane.
Sunlight hit the driver’s door from the side.
The scratch appeared as a clear pale line across the paint.
Sarah was nowhere in the frame.
Richard stared.
“That still doesn’t prove it’s the same scratch.”
Mark looked toward him.
“Where exactly is the current damage?”
Richard pointed toward the center of the driver’s door.
Mark compared the video.
Same height.
Same length.
Same slight upward angle near the rear edge.
Sarah crossed her arms.
“It’s the same mark.”
Richard’s voice rose.
“Maybe it got worse while it was here.”
Mark remained calm.
“Then we’ll keep watching.”
The footage continued.
At 8:09, Richard walked around the car with service advisor Lena.
At one point, he stood directly beside the scratched door.
He even placed one hand above the damaged area.
Mark paused.
Richard looked uncomfortable.
Sarah noticed.
“You were standing right beside it.”
Richard answered:
“I wasn’t looking for scratches.”
That was possible.
People often missed damage until later.
Mark did not accuse him of noticing it yet.
He simply continued.
Lena opened the driver’s door.
She looked down the side of the car.
Then wrote something onto the intake sheet.
Mark stopped the video.
“Where’s the check-in form?”
Sarah pointed toward the service desk.
Lena retrieved it.

she had written:
Long scratch — driver’s door.
Richard stared at the words.
Then Mark looked at the signature line.
There was a signature beneath the intake acknowledgment.
Richard’s signature.
But Richard immediately claimed he had never been shown what was written above it.
