Richard Accused a Mechanic of Scratching His Car — Then the Garage Cameras Showed the Damage Was Already There Before She Touched It

Chapter 7 — What Happened in the Grocery Store Parking Lot

Richard called Elaine.

He did not tell her what he wanted the answer to be.

He simply asked where she had parked.

Elaine described the row.

Richard explained that the garage had proven the scratch existed before he arrived.

Then he admitted something else.

“I blamed the mechanic.”

Elaine went quiet.

“Did you actually see her do it?”

Richard closed his eyes.

The question sounded painfully familiar now.

“No.”

“Richard.”

“I know.”

Elaine agreed to contact the grocery store.

Because the damage involved property in the parking area, the store’s security manager reviewed footage and later provided the relevant information through the proper process.

The video showed Elaine parking the previous afternoon.

The driver’s door appeared undamaged at that point.

She entered the store.

Twelve minutes later, another shopper pushed an empty cart toward the return area.

The shopper released it several feet too early.

The parking lot sloped slightly.

The cart rolled.

Picked up speed.

Then struck Richard’s driver’s door.

Its metal corner dragged across the paint before bouncing away.

The long scratch appeared instantly.

Mark watched the clip when Richard returned with Elaine the next day.

Sarah was there too.

There was no mystery now.

The damage occurred at the grocery store.

The previous afternoon.

Long before Sarah worked on the car.

Richard looked toward her.

“I owe you an apology.”

Sarah said nothing yet.

Richard continued.

“A real one.”

But before he could give it, Elaine asked him something that made the entire garage go quiet.

“When did you first realize there was a chance Sarah hadn’t done it?”

Richard hesitated.

Because the honest answer was much earlier than the moment he finally admitted it.
