Richard Accused a Mechanic of Scratching His Car — Then the Garage Cameras Showed the Damage Was Already There Before She Touched It
Chapter 6 — The Photograph Richard Hadn’t Opened
The message was from Richard’s wife, Elaine.
Sent at 6:18 PM the previous evening.
Elaine: I need to show you something when you get home.
Beneath it was a photograph.
Richard opened it.
The silver sedan was parked outside a grocery store.
Across the driver’s door was the same long scratch.
Everyone went quiet.
Mark looked toward Richard.
“This was yesterday?”
Richard nodded.
His face had gone pale.
There was another message beneath it.
Elaine: I came back from shopping and found this. I don’t know what happened.
Then:
Elaine: Please call me when you see this.
Richard stared at the phone.
“I never opened the picture.”
Sarah looked at him in disbelief.
“But you saw her message?”
Richard nodded reluctantly.
“I saw the notification.”
“I thought she wanted to talk about groceries or something.”
He had arrived home late.
Elaine was already asleep.
Richard left early the next morning to bring the car to the repair garage for scheduled brake work.
He never inspected the driver’s side closely.
Then after collecting the vehicle that afternoon, he noticed the scratch at a fuel station.
His first thought was:
The garage did it.
He became angry.
Drove straight back.
And accused Sarah.
Mark looked toward him.
“So Elaine had already photographed the damage the night before.”
Richard nodded.
Sarah crossed her arms.
“Then there’s no maybe anymore.”
Richard looked toward her.
“No.”
His voice was quiet.
“There isn’t.”
But Mark noticed something else.
Elaine’s photograph showed more than the scratch.
Behind the car was a shopping-cart return area.
And a metal cart was sitting unusually close to the driver’s door.
Richard stared at it.
“Could that have done it?”
Mark zoomed in.
Possibly.
But this time nobody was going to decide based on one suggestive detail.
Richard had already demonstrated what happened when someone did that.
So Mark asked one simple question.
“Does the grocery store have cameras?”
