Mr. Harris Blamed Noah for Scratching His Car — Then the Boy Showed Him a Recording That Changed Everything

Chapter 2 — The Recording

Noah had been filming his friend Mason trying to land a skateboard trick.

The camera wasn’t aimed directly at Mr. Harris’s car.

But most of the vehicle was visible in the background.

At 3:14 PM, the car was perfectly clean.

No scratches.

No damage.

Mr. Harris paused.

“What time did you stop playing out here?”

“Around three-thirty.”

“Keep going.”

Noah advanced the recording.

Mason tried another trick.

He fell.

Noah laughed.

Nothing important seemed to happen.

Then a blue pickup truck entered the frame.

It slowed near the curb.

Mr. Harris leaned closer.

“Whose truck is that?”

Noah shrugged.

“I don’t know.”

The pickup stopped across from the Harris house.

A woman stepped out.

She wore dark pants and a beige jacket.

She looked toward several houses.

Then toward Mr. Harris’s driveway.

Mr. Harris frowned.

“I’ve seen her before.”

Before he could explain, another car passed through the frame.

The video shook as Noah turned toward Mason.

When the camera faced the street again, the woman was walking near Mr. Harris’s car.

But nothing happened.

Noah stopped the clip.

“That’s all I recorded.”

Mr. Harris looked disappointed.

“This doesn’t show anyone scratching the car.”

“I know.”

“Then how does this prove you didn’t do it?”

Noah reached for the phone.

“Because look at this.”

He zoomed into the final frame.

The scratches still weren’t there.

“That was at 3:27,” Noah said.

“I went inside right after.”

Mr. Harris stared at the timestamp.

He had discovered the scratches shortly after four.

That left more than thirty minutes unaccounted for.

Then someone called from behind them.

“What happened?”

Claire Harris walked up the driveway carrying two grocery bags.

Mr. Harris lowered the phone.

“The car got scratched.”

Claire looked at the damage.

Then at Noah.

“Oh.”

Mr. Harris noticed the assumption forming immediately.

“It might not have been Noah.”

Noah looked at him.

A few minutes earlier, Mr. Harris had been certain.

Now he wasn’t.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

“Who’s that woman by the car?”

Mr. Harris looked at the frozen image.

Then he finally remembered.

Her name was Rachel Doyle.

And she had been at their house two days earlier.
