Mr. Harris Blamed Noah for Scratching His Car — Then the Boy Showed Him a Recording That Changed Everything
Chapter 4 — The Envelope
Mr. Harris walked to the windshield.
Nothing remained beneath the wiper.
The mystery man had apparently taken whatever Rachel left behind.
Claire looked at her husband.
“Call her.”
Mr. Harris hesitated.
“Rachel?”
“Yes.”
He found her number.
She answered on the fourth ring.
“Mr. Harris?”
Her voice sounded nervous.
“Were you at my house today?”
Silence.
Then Rachel sighed.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I left something for you.”
“What?”
Another hesitation.
“A letter.”
Mr. Harris looked at Claire.
“What was in the letter?”
Rachel lowered her voice.
“I shouldn’t discuss this over the phone.”
“Someone took it.”
Rachel stopped speaking.
“What?”
“A man came onto my property, removed your envelope, and scratched my car.”
Rachel’s breathing changed.
“Do you have video?”
“Yes.”
“Can you see his face?”
“Not clearly.”
Rachel whispered something under her breath.
“Who is he?” Mr. Harris asked.
“I don’t know for certain.”
“Then what was in the letter?”
Rachel finally answered.
“Proof that the company I work for has been lying to homeowners on your street.”
Claire stared at him.
Mr. Harris tightened his grip on the phone.
“Lying about what?”
Rachel said five words.
“What your properties are worth.”
