Chapter 8 — What Was Still Hidden in Room 214
Ruth had not sent Vanessa to Room 214 only to find the painted-over signature.
There was something else.
“Behind the supply cabinet,” Ruth said.
Vanessa frowned.
“I checked there.”
“Not behind it.”
Ruth smiled faintly.
“Under it.”
When Ruth and Evelyn were teenagers, they carved a tiny compartment beneath the bottom shelf.
They called it their “museum.”
They hid silly things there.
Movie tickets.
Candy wrappers.
Sketches.
Notes.
Ruth had not entered Room 214 since 1973.
She didn’t know whether anything remained.
Vanessa, Daniel, Ruth, and Martin returned together.
The old wooden supply cabinet still stood against the rear wall.
They carefully emptied it.
Then tilted it forward.
Beneath the base was a narrow wooden panel.
Ruth laughed.
“That’s it.”
Inside was a flattened metal cookie tin.
The lid resisted at first.
Then opened.
Inside were faded pieces of teenage life.
A concert ticket.
Two photographs.
A dried flower.
A handwritten list titled:
THINGS WE’LL DO WHEN WE’RE OLD.
Daniel smiled.
Number four:
Visit Paris.
Number seven:
Paint something nobody can erase.
Ruth started crying.
Then Vanessa found a folded sketch.
It was the original design for Stars Over Riverton.
Two different handwriting styles covered the margins.
Evelyn’s notes.
Ruth’s notes.
At the bottom, both girls had signed:
DESIGNED BY E.C. + R.M.
No debate remained.
The mural belonged to both of them.
