Chapter 5 — Ruth Mercer Tells Her Side
Vanessa finally agreed to meet Ruth.
She was seventy-one.
Gray curls had replaced the dark hair in the photograph.
But Vanessa recognized her immediately.
Ruth looked at Vanessa for a long moment.
“You have Evelyn’s eyes.”
Vanessa sat across from her.
“Did my mother erase your name?”
Ruth’s expression changed.
“No.”
Vanessa hadn’t expected that.
Daniel leaned forward.
“Then who did?”
Ruth looked down.
“Mr. Carter.”
Evelyn’s father.
Vanessa’s grandfather.
George Carter.
Ruth explained.
She and Evelyn designed Stars Over Riverton together.
Ruth sketched the city.
Evelyn developed the night sky.
They painted after school for almost four months.
When finished, they signed opposite corners.
Then Evelyn received an invitation to submit a portfolio to a prestigious summer art institute.
George saw an opportunity.
He wanted Evelyn’s mural to be presented as a single-artist achievement.
“Did the school allow that?” Daniel asked.
Ruth shook her head.
“Not officially.”
The art teacher, Mrs. Collins, insisted both girls be credited.
But over summer break, George volunteered to repaint damaged trim inside the classroom.

“What did Evelyn do?” Vanessa asked.
Ruth’s eyes filled.
“She fought with him.”

“She did?”

Ruth laughed bitterly.
“Your mother hated him for saying that.”
