Chapter 4 — Beneath the Blue Paint
The next morning, Daniel went with Vanessa to Riverton Cultural Center.
They received permission from the building director, Martin Hayes, to enter Room 214.
Martin remembered Evelyn’s name immediately.
“We were actually planning to restore the mural next year.”
Vanessa looked surprised.
“Restore it?”
“Parts are deteriorating.”
They climbed the narrow staircase.
Room 214 smelled of dust and old wood.
Then Daniel saw the mural.
Even after more than fifty years, it was impressive.
Buildings rose against a deep blue sky.
Tiny painted windows glowed yellow.
Hundreds of white stars curved across the ceiling edge.
At the lower right corner:
EVELYN CARTER — 1972.
No Ruth.
Vanessa walked toward the opposite corner.
“Ruth told me to look beneath the library tower.”
Daniel crouched.
Nothing.
Then Martin brought a portable conservation light used for inspecting old paintings.
Under angled illumination, the surface texture changed.
Two faint ridges appeared beneath a later layer of blue paint.
Letters.
Martin leaned closer.
“There’s definitely something underneath.”
A conservator was called before anyone touched it.
Two days later, careful examination revealed traces of white lettering.
First:
R.
Then:
M.
Finally enough became visible to reconstruct:
RUTH MERCER.
Vanessa stared at it.
“She was telling the truth.”
But Martin noticed something else.
The paint covering Ruth’s signature was old.
Very old.
Probably added within a few years of the mural’s completion.
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“Did your mother remove it?”
Vanessa’s face fell.
That was exactly what she had been afraid to discover.
