Chapter 9 — Vanessa Tells Lily the Truth
The cultural center decided to correct the mural’s attribution.
Conservators would not simply repaint Ruth’s signature.
They wanted to preserve the historical layers.
A small plaque was installed beside the wall:
STARS OVER RIVERTON, 1972
Designed and painted collaboratively by Evelyn Carter and Ruth Mercer.
The yearbook photograph and original sketch were displayed nearby.
Vanessa helped write the short history.
She insisted it include something important.
Not that Evelyn stole the mural.
Because the evidence did not support that.
The truth was more complicated.
Evelyn and Ruth created it together.
George erased one name.
Then newspapers and biographies repeated what the wall appeared to say.
Years of silence turned an incomplete visual record into accepted history.
At home, Vanessa sat beside Lily.
“Can Mommy ask you something?”
Lily nodded.
Vanessa pointed toward the crayon number still beside the kitchen doorway.
“Why did you write 214 there?”
Lily answered:
“So Daddy could find it.”
“Why didn’t you just tell him?”
Lily looked confused.
“You said secret.”
Vanessa froze.
She remembered telling someone on the phone:
“I can’t tell Daniel yet. Keep Room 214 secret until I know what’s true.”
Lily had heard her.
And tried to respect the word “secret” while still warning Daniel.
Vanessa hugged her.
“You weren’t in trouble.”
“I know.”
Then Lily asked:
“Is two-one-four bad?”
Vanessa smiled.
“No.”
“Then why were you scared?”
Vanessa thought carefully.
“Because sometimes learning something new about somebody you love changes an old story.”
Lily shrugged.
“But Grandma still made the picture?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Yes.”
“And Ruth?”
“Yes.”
Lily grinned.
“Then both.”
Vanessa laughed.
It had taken adults weeks to arrive at the answer Lily understood immediately.
