Liam Was Left Crying Over a Chocolate Mess — Then Daniel Found His Older Son Holding the Evidence on the Couch
Chapter 9 — Two Brothers Make the Recipe Again
Marcus visited three weeks later.
Daniel opened the front door.
His brother looked older.
Gray starting at his temples.
Same crooked smile.
For several seconds, both men remained still.
Then Marcus looked down.
Liam was standing behind Daniel holding a mixing bowl.
“Are you Uncle Marcus?”
Marcus smiled.
“Apparently.”
Liam held up the bowl.
“We’re making chocolate.”
That broke the tension.
Marcus laughed.
“Then I came on the right day.”
Ethan entered carrying the yellow recipe card.
He looked nervous.
Daniel had already disciplined him for lying and blaming Liam.
But he also admitted something to his older son.
“You were wrong to lie.”
Then:
“But I understand why you thought this family had secrets you had to investigate alone.”
That part belonged to Daniel.
He had refused to tell his children Marcus existed.
Silence created the empty space Ethan filled himself.
In the kitchen, Marcus placed his half of the old trophy on the counter.
Daniel brought his.
The pieces still fit.
Not perfectly.
The cut was rough.
But together, the plaque could be read again.
STATE JUNIOR BAKING CHAMPIONSHIP — FIRST PLACE — 2002.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
“You really sawed this thing in half?”
Marcus grinned.
“I was seventeen.”
Daniel laughed.
For the first time in twenty-four years, they laughed together.
Then they made Midnight Chocolate Squares.
Marcus prepared the crust.
Daniel made the raspberry filling.
Ethan melted the chocolate.
Carefully this time.
Liam stood on a stool and stirred.
When Ethan spilled one small drop on the counter, Liam immediately pointed at him.
“He did it.”
Everyone burst out laughing.
Ethan did too.
“Okay. I deserved that.”
